Overpopulation Definition

When the number of inhabitants in a territory is considered excessive, there is the phenomenon of overpopulation.

The concept of overpopulation is clearly negative, since it indicates that the number of inhabitants of a place is too high and the means available to serve them are insufficient. In this way, the idea of overpopulation is not simply numerical but depends on whether the resources that can be accessed are sufficient or not.

While this concept is used for humans, the population of animals can also be affected by this phenomenon. In these cases, the disproportionate number of a race poses a danger when it threatens the balance of an ecosystem .

Causes of overpopulation

In undeveloped nations, birth rates are high for two main reasons: the absence of birth policies and the belief that a large number of children can help the family economy .

Mortality rates are falling in most countries, which is due to an improvement in health systems. On the other hand, the average life expectancy of the planet as a whole also increases significantly.

The migratory movements towards the big cities make some of them have an uncontrolled growth.

Effects of overpopulation

The consequences are very diverse and most have a problematic sense. One of them is the employment problem that, in addition, is aggravated by the greater technification in the production processes and the lower need for labor.

The social exclusion of some sectors of the population is another consequence of the excessive increase of the population.

The environment scenario and the challenges

Overpopulation has an unquestionable environmental impact. The majority of nature's resources are limited and cannot satisfy a population that is constantly increasing. In some areas of the planet, logging is associated with the nutritional needs of the population that is growing gradually.

Overcrowding in some cities has obvious and all negative effects: lack of space, feeling overwhelmed or stressed, problems living together , etc.
